This website hosts archival research performed on the drafting and enactment of the Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act, a federal law which settled the land claims brought forth by two tribes located in Maine in the 1970s.

The research was sponsored by the Maine Indian Tribal-State Commission and performed by Suffolk University Law School.

The focus of the research was on the the April, 1980 to September, 1980 period, with particular attention to gathering information regarding the formulation of and references to the following sections and topics:

• Section 1723 focusing on the treaties;
• Sustenance and protected sustenance practices;
• Definition of internal tribal matters;
• Section 1725(h) of MICSA; and
• Section 1735(b) of MICSA.
